San Francisco outlet malls: a shopping guide with a chauffeur

Which outlets are worth the drive, how much time to allow, and how to handle the logistics of shopping with a private driver.

Shopping shows up in almost every California itinerary — and the Bay Area has four major outlet centres, each with a different profile.

The main outlets

  • San Francisco Premium Outlets (Livermore): the largest, around 180 stores, 50 minutes from the city. Premium and sportswear brands.
  • Gilroy Premium Outlets: 1h30 south, ideal if you are already heading to Monterey.
  • Napa Premium Outlets: small and practical, perfect alongside a winery day.
  • Petaluma Village: on the way to Sonoma and the north coast.

How much time to allow

Four to five hours at Livermore is enough to shop well. Less becomes a sprint; more becomes exhaustion.

Before you go

  • Sign up for the outlet's VIP programme online: extra coupons are issued instantly.
  • County sales tax is added at the register; the tag price is never the final price.
  • Check your airline's baggage limits before buying extra suitcases.

The practical part

Shopping means bags — and public transport does not mix with bags. We drive your group directly to the outlet, keep purchases in the vehicle all day and, if you like, add a winery or restaurant stop on the way back.
