Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur in one day: a realistic itinerary

Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur are the densest stretch of the central coast. You can see all three in one day — as long as the plan respects distances and daylight.

Suggested itinerary (from San Francisco)

• 7:30am — Leave the city via I-280, ahead of commuter traffic.
• 9:30am — Arrive in Monterey: Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium (always book online).
• 11:30am — 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, stopping at the Lone Cypress.
• 1pm — Lunch in Carmel-by-the-Sea, with time for galleries and the white-sand beach.
• 3pm — South into Big Sur to Bixby Creek Bridge, with Point Lobos on the way back.
• 7:30pm — Return to San Francisco.

What to cut if time is short

If something has to go, skip the aquarium (2-3 hours) and spend that time in Big Sur, where the landscape is irreplaceable. Travelling with children, do the opposite.

Wildlife and weather

Otters, harbour seals and sea lions show up almost daily at Point Lobos and in the bay. From December to April, grey whales are often visible from shore. Bring a jacket: even in July the coast sits between 55°F and 65°F.

Why do it with a chauffeur

It is a 250-mile round trip with tight curves and very limited parking in Carmel. With a private driver, your group steps out exactly where it matters — no parking hunt, no clock-watching.
